Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Review - How Nifty is This Fifty?

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 is one of the first lenses I bought as a photographer and I still use it on professional portrait shoots to this day.

I believe it is the best portrait lens for the Canon Rebel T7.

This lens is also known as the “nifty fifty” due to its affordable price while providing versatility in many photography situations.

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 is known for its wide f/1.8 aperture and excellent image quality and I’d recommend getting this lens if you photograph:

  • Portrait photography
  • Headshot photography
  • Street photography
  • Travel Photography
  • Product Photography

Keep reading below to see the example images I took with the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8, as well as my full review on why I think it’s one of the best lenses for the Canon Rebel T7.

Canon EF 50mm f1.8 Focal Length

The focal length of this lens is 50mm, making it a very versatile option for portraits, street scenes, and even close-up detail shots.

However, it’s important to note that the Canon Rebel T7 is an APS-C sensor (crop sensor) camera, which means this lens will behave like a 75mm-80mm length lens.

I took a side-by-side photo to show the difference between using this lens on a full-frame sensor camera versus a crop sensor camera like the Canon Rebel T7 here:

Canon EF 50mm f1.8 Image Quality

The image quality of this lens is excellent and is renowned for its sharpness and clarity.

This lens features a Gaussian optical formula. All you need to know is that this will minimize spherical aberrations and deliver crisp images with beautiful detail.

Canon EF 50mm f1.8 Maximum Aperture

The maximum aperture of this lens is f/1.8 meaning you can capture some nice shallow depth of field, bokeh images.

Canon EF 50mm f1.8 Build

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 is very lightweight and compact, making it easy to carry around all day.

EF 50mm f1.8 focus ring

This is important if you want to use this lens for weddings, street scenes, or travel, where you often have to carry the camera for a long time.

Pair this with the Canon Rebel T7, which is also fairly lightweight, and you’ll be feeling good all day!

Canon EF 50mm f1.8 Affordability

For many photographers just starting out, budget is a consideration.

Well, this lens is called “nifty-fifty” for a reason.

And that’s because it packs a punch while also remaining on the affordable side.

Canon EF 50mm f1.8 Compatibility

Being a part of Canon’s EF lens lineup, the 50mm f/1.8 is not only compatible with the Canon Rebel T7, but also with the entire range of Canon DSLR cameras, and with the appropriate adapter, the EOS R mirrorless cameras as well.

This means that if you decide to get this lens for your Canon Rebel T7 and decide to upgrade to a full-frame camera or mirrorless camera down the road, you can still use this amazing lens!

In summary, I highly recommend this lens for your Canon Rebel T7. Most photographers have this lens in their camera bag, so be sure to check it out, you won’t be disappointed!

Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS Review - A Versatile Powerhouse?

The Canon EF 24-70mm f4L IS USM is a premium zoom lens that I have used with the Canon Rebel T7.

It’s versatile and durable, and the image quality is exceptional.

This lens is a part of Canon’s prestigious L-series lineup, which is known for its professional-grade optics and robust construction.

As mentioned, because this lens is a zoom lens, you have different focal length ranges you can play with.

This means this lens is great for:

  • Landscape photography
  • Travel photography
  • Event photography
  • Wedding photography
  • Street photography
  • Videos

This lens can also work for portrait work at its telephoto end of (70mm) but I’d recommend getting a prime lens if you mostly do portraits.

You can also use this lens for macro photography because it has a macro mode at the 70mm end, but I recommend getting a dedicated macro lens like the one I’ll discuss after this one (the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L).

Keep reading below to see the example images I took with the Canon EF 24-70mm f4L IS, as well as my full review on why I think it’s one of the best lenses for the Canon Rebel T7.

Canon EF 24-70mm f4L Focal Length

The EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM offers a versatile zoom range that will allow you to capture great photos covering wide-angle to short telephoto focal lengths.

On a full-frame camera, this lens has a focal length of 24-70mm, but on a crop sensor camera like the Canon Rebel T7, the focal length of this lens will behave like a 38-112mm lens.

So that’s important to remember.

Check out this comparison of using the 40mm lens on a crop sensor camera like the Canon Rebel T7, where it acts like a 64mm lens, against using it on a full-frame camera where it stays true to its 40mm size.

But this focal length, if you use it on the Canon Rebel T7, will be excellent for everyday photography situations.

Canon EF 24-70mm f4L Image Quality

This lens has great image quality.

As mentioned earlier, this lens is a part of the L-series lineup by Canon which is known for their optical quality.

In terms of technical features, it has two aspherical elements and two UD (ultra-dispersion) elements which means it will have minimal chromatic aberrations and have outstanding sharpness and color accuracy across zoom range.

This lens also has Super Spectra coating which will help reduce flaring and ghosting.

Canon EF 24-70mm f4L Maximum Aperture

The maximum aperture of this lens is f/4.

While this might not provide as shallow a depth of field as an f/2.8 or wider lens, I’ve found this maximum aperture provides a good balance between light-gathering capabilities while remaining compact.

You can still get some decent bokeh with this lens.

Canon EF 24-70mm f4L Build

The build of the Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L is solid.

It has weather sealing if you photograph in outdoor conditions and also has a lock switch to prevent any zoom creep.

This lens also has image stabilization which will help minimize camera shake.

It’s also made out of solid-made plastic.

Canon EF 24-70mm f4L Affordability

As mentioned, this lens is part of the L-series lineup, which is known for premium-priced lenses.

However, this lens is priced relatively well compared to the other L-series lenses.

It’s a valuable investment for serious enthusiasts and a middle-tiered price for professionals looking for great performance who don’t want to spend thousands on the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 variant.

Canon EF 24-70mm f4L Compatibility

The Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM lens is fully compatible with all Canon DSLR cameras both full-frame and APS-C sensor like the Canon Rebel T7.

This means that if you decide to upgrade from the Canon Rebel T7 down the line like I have, you will be able to still use this lens!

The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens is an amazing choice for the Canon Rebel T7, especially if you’re interested in macro and portrait photography.

  • Headshot photography

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Focal Length

The focal length of this lens is 100mm on full frame cameras and 160mm on ASP-C sensor cameras like the Canon Rebel T7 due to the crop factor.

Here’s a side-by-side comparison.

Canon EF 100mm f.28L Full Frame vs. Crop Sensor
Canon EF 100mm f.28L Full Frame vs. Crop Sensor

This focal length is the main reason this lens excels in macro photography and close-up portraits.

The focal length allows you to get up close to your subjects while maintaining a comfortable distance so you aren’t jamming your face into the subject.

Since this lens becomes a 160mm focal length on the Rebel T7, this extended reach makes it even more excellent for close-up macro shots or tight portraits and headshots.

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Image Quality

The image quality of the Canon EF 10mm f/2.8L is superb.

It is an L-series lens, after all.

This lens features one Ultra-Low Dispersion element which helps reduce chromatic aberrations and enhance the clarity and color of your shots.

In terms of macro specifics, it features an infinity to life-size (1:1) macro magnification meaning you can capture some very precis, and detailed shots.

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Maximum Aperture

The maximum aperture of this lens is f/2.8 meaning it excels in various lighting conditions.

The wide maximum aperture enables you to isolate your subject with that smooth shallow depth of field and bokeh we all love.

If you have to photograph in low-light, the maximum aperture will also allow you to photograph in these situations without having to raise the ISO on your Canon Rebel T7 too high.

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Build

The build of this lens is quality as well.

It features weather sealing protecting you from any dust or moisture you may come across when taking your macro shots outdoors.

This lens also has image stabilization and is made out of durable plastic with a metal lens mount:

Canon EF 100mm 2.8L Macro Lens Image Stabilization

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Affordability

Considering the professional-grade features and performance of the EF 100mm f/2.8L, this lens has great value.

You have to remember that it is an L-series lens, so it may have a higher initial investment compared to non-L-series lenses, but I feel it’s definitely worth it if you want to have great macro shots.

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Compatibility

This lens is fully compatible with the Canon Rebel T7 and all of Canon’s EF and EF-S mounts.

This means if you choose to upgrade from your Rebel T7 in the future, you can still make great use of this lens!
